  • Celebrity stylist Erin Walsh shares her top tips for dressing for New Year’s Eve
  • Walsh predicts the holiday will be all about sparkle, shine and daring accessories
  • “These exaggerated elements make you feel more empowered and bold,” she says

With the holiday magic still going strong and the promise of a fresh start in the air, there’s something special about dressing for New Year’s Eve.

It’s an occasion that has long encouraged festive items like sequins and sparkles — and for good reason. “A lot of times, you see people gravitating to trends that help them to blend in,” celebrity stylist Erin Walsh tells PEOPLE. “But with New Year’s Eve, it’s more of a ‘let me shine’ mentality, literally.”

Walsh, whose A-list clients include Selena Gomez and Anne Hathaway, adds that holiday fashion serves as a “means to harness and find joy” in the midst of our busy, fast-paced lives.

The stylist has partnered with Motorola (and its new AI-powered razr) to help streamline her own end-of-year chaos. “To have a means to capture the content like I can with my razr, that makes me happy. It makes things flow more seamlessly,” she explains.

When it comes to dressing for New Year’s Eve festivities, Walsh says that first and foremost, it’s important to be practical. “People are dancing. There’s a lot going on. There’s partying,” she explains, which is why her number one tip is “having your undergarment situation sorted.”

Playing with texture and color is also a sure-fire way to amplify your NYE fashion. Rather than traditional sequins, Walsh suggests trying an oversized variety to bring a bit of playfulness to your look. Adding a daring accessory or experimenting with silhouette are other ways to turn up the volume.

“The idea on New Year’s is to feel a bit supernova,” Walsh explains. “I think supersized elements, whether that’s a chunky shoe or an exaggerated trouser volume or a bold shoulder crop jacket to pair with it — these exaggerated elements make you feel more empowered and bold.”
