Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz among pressing Mets offseason decisions

LAS VEGAS — The Mets splashed big last winter with Juan Soto, but that historic signing couldn’t obscure holes that never really got filled.
Over the final two months of last season in particular, president of baseball operations David Stearns received constant reminders that he whiffed in key areas, both over the winter and then attempting to recalibrate the roster before the trade deadline.
The result was a continued free fall that left the Mets absent from the playoffs.
His third offseason with the Mets already underway, Stearns will spend the next few days at the general managers meetings trying to lay the groundwork for correcting those same areas, while addressing other business.
