Vivica A. Fox is opening up about her lifelong connection with former flame 50 Cent.
Fox spoke to PEOPLE exclusively at the It’s a Wonderful Lifetime holiday event on Tuesday, Nov. 18, in New York City while promoting her new Lifetime holiday movie, The Christmas Campaign. During the conversation, the actress got candid about her relationship with 50 Cent, whom she briefly dated in 2003.
“Well, to be honest with you, it’s kind of like the gift that keeps on giving,” Fox, 61, says. “We’re friends. There’s no negativity.”
She went on to reference a recent comment she made at the Ultimate Women’s Expo in Edison, N.J., in which she jokingly told a crowd, “Don’t date 50 Cent. Don’t date no rappers,” when asked to give advice to young women pursuing their dreams.

“This time it was positive,” she says of 50 Cent’s reaction to the comment. “Everyone got a good chuckle out of it, and it was refreshing to not fight with him.”
Fox and 50 Cent, 50, have famously taken swipes at one another via social media in the years since their breakup, and were seemingly on negative terms at times.

“And we’ll always be connected … I call us like the black Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton,” she continues, referencing Taylor and Burton’s famous on-and-off romance. (The pair were married and divorced two separate times.)

Fox further clarified her recent comment about the “Candy Shop” singer while appearing on the Nov. 18 episode of Sherri, hosted by Sherri Shepherd. During the episode, the Independence Day actress explained that she had actually been talking about what she wished she had known about high-profile romances in general rather than one specific relationship.
“What happened is they [the Ultimate Women’s panel host] said, ‘Vivica, if you could tell your 17-year-old self anything [what would it be]?’ So that was me [being] like, ‘I wish I knew, you know, not to go public [with a relationship] so fast. Not to have it out there. Not to have the breakup that’s lasted 22 years,’ you know?”
“We’re no longer fighting, y’all … You know you got that one [person] that you always got a little special place for … We are in a good place,” she added while speaking to Shepherd.
While talking exclusively to PEOPLE at the recent Lifetime event, Fox also shared some details about her professional wins — including the upcoming holiday movie The Christmas Campaign.

“The most exciting thing for me is working with Jackée [Harry] again. I just absolutely adore her,” she says. “And then I had a wonderful time working with two brand new actors that I’ve never worked before — Austen [Jaye] and Chelsea [Rose Cook]. Their energy was so refreshing, [and] the storyline was really, really good. And then I got to executive produce it as well as star.”

“I’ve become the queen of Lifetime Christmas and queen of Lifetime in general,” she adds. “I’ve done over, what, 20, 30 [movies] with them? [And] the fact that I have become a filmmaker [in addition to an actress] is what is really important to me in my growth.”
The Christmas Campaign airs on Lifetime on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 10 ET.
