  • She said when she had the hospital relay the message again, her mother-in-law was very upset and security had to get involved

A new mom was shocked to learn that her mother-in-law had been trying to meet her newborn baby at the hospital, despite being told they weren’t ready for visitors yet.

The original poster (OP) shared their story on Reddit and explained that she had a scheduled caesarean section (c-section). Before the surgery, she and her husband had told only four people — her mom and sister, and his parents. They specifically told their family that they’ll tell them when the baby arrives and when they’re ready for visitors.

OP said her mom and sister respected the message. They waited for their text and visited during the designated hours. However, her mother-in-law showed up at the hospital at 6:45 a.m. OP’s surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m.

She continued, explaining that her mother-in-law had told the nurses she was her mother to try and get into pre-op. When nurses refused, OP’s mother-in-law sat in the waiting room for four hours. OP said that when she was in recovery after her surgery, she was trying to do skin-to-skin with her baby and breastfeed for the first time. She was “drugged up” and just trying to bond with her baby.

“A nurse comes in and says, ‘There’s a woman in the waiting room claiming to be the grandmother and she’s asking when she can come back,'” OP wrote. “I was confused because we hadn’t even texted anyone that baby was here yet. I asked who it was. The nurse checked her notes and said, ‘Linda [MIL’s name].'”

OP told the nurse no, they weren’t accepting visitors today and that they’d tell their family when they were ready. When OP’s mother-in-law heard the news, she “threw a fit in the waiting room.” It was loud enough that the security had to get involved. OP said she was crying and saying she had “every right to meet her grandson” and that it wasn’t fair.

The hospital asked her to leave. When she refused, they threatened to call the police. Finally, OP’s mother-in-law left, but not before she yelled at OP that she was “keeping her grandson from her” and that this was “cruel and unnatural.”

OP explained that her husband didn’t even know his mom was there. When he called his mom, she answered crying and said she just wanted to “see her baby.” OP stressed that she said “her baby. Not her grandson. Her baby.”

Her husband “lost it” and told his mom that she didn’t have any right to be there. He said they’d specifically said they’d let family know when they were ready for visitors, and showing up unannounced and lying to the hospital wasn’t okay.

When OP’s mother-in-law said she just “wanted to be there” for her son, OP’s husband said she wasn’t there for him, but was there for her. After crying harder, she said she didn’t think “no visitors” meant her, since she was the grandma.

OP’s husband hung up on his mom and said she now wouldn’t be meeting the baby for at least a week because of what happened. OP’s mother-in-law proceeded to blow up both of their phones and their siblings’ phones, saying that they’re being cruel and that “grandmothers have rights.”

Now, OP said she’s exhausted and hormonal, and is recovering from major surgery. She said her husband’s aunt texted her and said this is just what grandmothers do and that she will “understand when you’re older.”

OP said that she just became a mother, and she understands plenty. But she doesn’t understand “trampling boundaries” and making someone else’s medical procedures about themselves. She said her baby is healthy and “MIL can wait her turn like everyone else.”
