Man Gets Asked to Be Best Man 6 Days Before the Wedding

NEED TO KNOW

  • A man shared that he was asked by his childhood best friend to be his best man six days ahead of the wedding
  • He went on to explain that he lives 12 hours away from the location and plane tickets were at “peak” price
  • Now he’s not sure how to handle the last minute request

A man is in a bind after his friend asked him to be his best man at his wedding, with only six days notice.

The man shared on Reddit’s popular “Am I the A—–” forum, his best friend from childhood, who he once considered a “brother” and part of his “family” until he moved abroad six years ago, recently asked him to be his best man.

He said that the pair “drifted apart but we still talked from time to time,” which is why he was torn when his best friend called him up and asked him to be his best man with the wedding only six days away.

“I couldn’t give him an answer. I am a [12-hour] flight away and the wedding is in 6 days. The ticket prices are peak and I don’t know if I could afford the round trip,” he shared on Reddit.

“My best friend told me that it would mean the world that I would be there as his best man,” he continued. “I can’t decide because I feel like I might ruin the day for him by not being there.”

He then asked other Redditors what they would do in his situation. Several responded noting that they did not believe that he would be in the wrong for turning down being a best man, as it was late notice.

“If it would mean the world to him then why did he wait until [the]last minute to tell you and not offer to help you arrive?,” one person commented.

Another suggested that he tell his friend, “I’m flattered, but there is no way I can do that on such short notice,” adding that “if he was really your friend, you would have been invited weeks ago.”

One commenter said that his friend’s “lack of planning is not your emergency. IF you can’t afford it – you can’t afford it.”

“Thank him for the honor of being asked. Tell him you wish you’d had more notice because you would LOVE to have participated. Unfortunately, with the short notice you simply cannot get the time off work, nor can you afford to travel at the last minute,” they added.

The Redditor thanked the people for their advice and noted that he was “surprised” as well that he was asked less than a week ahead of his friend’s “big day,” especially since for his own wedding, he asked his best man to undertake the role with “five months notice.” He said he also “paid” for his friend’s tickets.
