Josh Hutcherson Reveals What ‘Hit Home’ About His ‘I Love LA’ Character (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW
- Josh Hutcherson stars as the grounding boyfriend to Rachel Sennott’s character in I Love LA
- He tells PEOPLE how the chaos of the comedy mirrors his own life — even if he’s partly to blame for that
- The Hunger Games star, 33, also weighs in on his long-held “internet boyfriend” title
Josh Hutcherson is surrounded by chaos in I Love LA, and that mirrors how his life sometimes feels.
The actor, 33, plays Dylan, the level-headed boyfriend of Rachel Sennott‘s free-wheeling Maia in the HBO series, which Sennott, 30, created and wrote, and together, the pair balance each other out.
For Hutcherson, that contrast of freedom and structure rings true.
“I feel like Dylan is very much wanting to plan things and do things in a way that are logical and make sense,” he tells PEOPLE. “And I feel that I have a knack for surrounding myself with people that are the opposite, and that can be frustrating at times.”
The chaotic situations that Dylan finds himself in thanks to who he’s surrounded by — namely, Maia and her wild friends Talullah (Odessa A’zion), Alani (True Whitaker) and Charlie (Jordan Firstman) — “hit home” for Hutcherson.

“Just the idea of — there’s a way that things can just be done that makes life just easier, and just a little tiny bit of planning goes a long way,” he says.
He’s not doing himself any favors, though, considering he’ll readily admit: “I’m drawn towards [the] chaotic and I’m attracted towards chaos.”
Sennott, 30, has been open about how she cast Hutcherson in the boyfriend role thanks to his years as an internet boyfriend — the result of turns in blockbuster hits like The Hunger Games franchise.
For Hutcherson, though, he says he “didn’t even think about” the label “for a second” when it came to taking on the job. “I didn’t think about that, no.”
That being said, it’s not as if he’s complaining. “Look, if that’s what got me this job, then I’m happy for it. I’ll take it,” he quips.

In general, he says, “I kind of don’t really engage all that much with [the] online world.”

Regardless of his humility, Sennott has continued to rave that the actor is the perfect person to play her boyfriend in the series.
“Josh is incredible. I’ve been a fan of his since Bridge to Terabithia,” she told TV Insider, referring to the 2007 film Hutcherson starred in alongside AnnaSophia Robb.
“I feel like when I met with him on Zoom, I was like, he’s so disarming and charming, and he immediately feels at home. He is warm and makes you feel comfortable.”
New episodes of I Love LA premiere Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
