Just moments after her nuptials, off-duty nurse Heather Schubert pulled over and helped a car crash victim while en route home. Still wearing her wedding dress, she worked to save the stranger’s life.

“When you’re a nurse and you always put other people first, that’s always my first instinct,” the bride told her local news station, WDSU, in an interview published on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Schubert, who works at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, explained to the outlet that she never expected her newlywed life to begin at a crash scene, but as she and her husband were driving home on I-10 the night of Saturday, Nov. 22, and “saw a man laying across the road” with all of his car’s airbags deployed, she knew she had to act fast.

“I assisted in the manner of seeing what his pupils were like if we had any trauma responses, which he, in fact, did have trauma. His pupils were not reactive to light,” Schubert remembered.

The bride stayed with the critically injured man until emergency medical services arrived. His current condition is unclear.

Despite having just tied the knot and being excited to celebrate at home, Schubert told WDSU that she didn’t hesitate to stop and help.

“There’s never a question. There’s never a hesitation. That’s just something that I- I will always probably be the person to run into the accident to see if I can help,” she said, adding, “I would hope that anybody, whether they’re a nurse or not, anybody if they see somebody in trouble would run and do the same thing.”

Steven Tafoya, a critical care paramedic, explained to WDSU that emergency teams are trained on how to respond to unexpected accidents like this.

“Just because we’re off the clock doesn’t mean that instinct stops,” he said. “What this lady did on her wedding day no less is just remarkable and just shows her commitment to health care in general.”
