A South Carolina mother of three who admitted to drowning her 6-year-old daughter and attempting to kill one of her other daughters has learned her fate.

Jamie Michele Bradley-Brun, 40, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder in the 2023 death of her 6-year-old daughter, Mackay Bradley-Brun, the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said in a press release shared on Dec. 18.

Bradley-Brun was also ordered to serve a concurrent 30-year-sentence for trying to drown her 8-year-old daughter, who, according to Deputy Solicitor Mary Jones, fought back against her mother with help from her surviving older sister.

On May 19, 2023, Bradley-Brun woke up Mackay and told her to undress and get into a bathtub on her knees, per the release. The mother then held her daughter’s hair under the water until she drowned.

After the girl was dead, Bradley-Brun put the girl in a “funeral dress” and placed her body on a bed. She then woke up her 8-year-old daughter to try to “repeat the process,” the release states.

According to prosecutors, the girl escaped after her screams woke her older sister, who then intervened and ran outside with the 8-year-old to call for help.

Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home in Saint Helena Island around 1:25 a.m. that morning after receiving a 911 call, they said in a statement at the time.

“This wasn’t an accident or a mental health crisis,” Jones said in the release. “This defendant planned it. She is competent and she knew what she was doing. She placed blame on others and on her alcoholism, neither of which is a legitimate defense in South Carolina.”

The prosecutor added, “She held her daughter under the water and tried to do the same to her middle daughter. There is no excuse.”
