After Nearly 5 Years, FBI Catches Man Allegedly Behind D.C. Pipe Bombs — on Eve of Jan. 6

Five years after a man placed two pipe bombs near the Capitol the night before the Jan. 6 riots, a suspect has been taken into custody.

According to reports from the Associated Press, The New York Times and NBC News, the FBI arrested a man in connection with the case.

Previously, the FBI said “an unidentified individual placed pipe bombs near the offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C.,” on Jan. 5, 2021.

Half a decade later, the AP, NBC and Fox News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the suspect has been identified as Brian Cole.

It’s not yet clear if the planting of the bombs had any clear connection to the Jan. 6 riots, according to the AP.

The AP reported that Cole was arrested in Virginia, though it was not clear what charges he could potentially face.

Cole is a resident of Woodbridge, Va., a Washington, D.C., suburb, according to the AP.

The bombs discovered never exploded, but they were found on Jan. 6, the same day a horde of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, aiming to stop Congress from voting to certify the 2020 presidential election results.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing a gray hoodie, black gloves and a face mask. He also wore black and gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a yellow logo, per the FBI.

The FBI also said the suspect used backpacks to carry the bombs. Both devices were put in place within 30 minutes of each other.
