  • Cruze previously opened up to PEOPLE about how she bounced multiple checks while managing money in her student checking account

Dave Ramsey’s daughter Rachel Cruze remains transparent about how her upbringing with the famed finance guru likely looked a little different than others.

In a TikTok shared on Monday, Nov. 24, Cruze reviewed a few things that she used to believe “were normal growing up” then later realized were unique to her childhood. She began by recalling a time when she and her siblings, Denise and Daniel, were required to read Dave Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends and Influence People as teenagers.

Cruze says they then had to give their dad a “two-page book report” reflecting on what they learned from the self-help guide. She next reviewed how Ramsey used to send his kids to a flea market on weekends with $5 or $10. “We had to go and learn how to negotiate what we wanted for a lower price,” said Cruze

The Smart Money Happy Hour podcast host also said that if they bounced a check — “which I did as a teenager,” she admitted — they had to own up to the error in a particularly honest way.

“You actually had to go down to the bank and talk to the branch manager and apologize to him for lying, because you told him you had money in his bank to spend and you didn’t, and that was a lie,” Cruze recalled and concluded by noting that she’s “grateful and happy” for the way she grew up.

In September, Cruze opened up about her early financial education in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, recalling the same sense of real-world responsibility that her parents instilled in her younger self.

She said she and her siblings learned to budget with “a certain amount of money” she had in a student checking account. “And if we wanted more money, obviously, we had to get a job,” she added.

Cruze also brought up some of her first few money management mistakes in conversation with PEOPLE, noting that she actually bounced three checks during the second month she had the checking account.

“I think it was at Hollister and Abercrombie, and all the 2002 stores in the mall,” she recalled. “I had to go down to the bank and apologize to the branch manager for it.”
