A Michigan doctor was sentenced to 35-60 in prison on sexual misconduct charges after he secretly recorded his wife, their young children and female relatives.

Oumair Aejaz was sentenced in Oakland County Sixth Circuit Court in Michigan on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The former doctor pleaded no contest to all 31 counts of sexual misconduct against him, according to a statement from prosecutors.

“This sentence ensures Oumair Aejaz will never again harm another victim,” Prosecuting Attorney Karen D. McDonald said. “However, the damage he inflicted upon his victims will not go away with this resolution. We must continue to support them as they move forward from this trauma.”

Aejaz, 41, previously treated patients at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township, Mich., and Henry Ford Hospital Macomb in Clinton Township, Mich., CBS Detroit reported.

The former medical provider was convicted of two counts of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, three counts of Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, four counts of Child Sexually Abusive Commercial Activity, 13 counts of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, and nine counts of Capturing/Distributing an Image of an Unclothed Person, according to prosecutors.

Authorities began investigating Aejaz in August 2024, after his wife brought forth evidence that he had been secretly recording her, their two children, who are minors, and several female relatives in their home.

The investigation found that Aejaz also recorded children and adults at Goldfish Swim School in Rochester Hills, Mich., as well as children and adults in hospital rooms and bedrooms using a hidden camera, according to CBS Detroit.

“I applaud Judge Anderson’s sentencing decision and the Prosecutor’s efforts to hold this sick individual fully to account,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in a statement. “The exploitation of women and children—especially in some cases when he used his trusted position as a physician—is absolutely unconscionable.”

Bouchard continued, “This sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes and delivers the justice these victims deserve. I also want to recognize the great work of the detectives and our computer crimes unit for the tireless and successful work in locating evidence to make this sentence possible.”

Several investigations connected to the case remain ongoing, according to McDonald’s press release.

Three lawsuits filed in October by three different women allege that Aejaz recorded and sexually assaulted them at Henry Ford Hospital in Macomb, Mich., and that nothing was done when they filed complaints with the hospital, according to CBS News.

“Like so many in our community, we remain deeply disturbed by the conduct of Oumair Aejaz that lead to his criminal convictions,” a spokesperson for Henry Ford Health tells PEOPLE.

The Henry Ford Health spokesperson continued, “As we have previously shared, Dr. Aejaz was an independent physician who formerly had privileges at our Macomb hospital. Throughout the investigation, we have fully cooperated with law enforcement, and we are grateful he has been brought to justice. Ensuring the safety, security and privacy of our patients, team members and anyone who enters our facilities is our top priority and a responsibility we take very seriously.”

A class action lawsuit was settled in October, Fieger Law attorney Matthew Piccirilli tells PEOPLE. “We’re representing a fourth family, a potential victim, and we are working with local sheriff’s department to confirm whether or not video evidence exists and are moving forward a little slower pace on that one,” Piccirilli tells PEOPLE.

“The way they identified victims in the class was if his name appeared in your medical record, you were included in the class. And then after that first round of payments to everybody, if there was video evidence or you were able to provide a statement of him recording you in a compromised state of undress or compromised position, or of actual sexual assault, you were allowed to claim additional monies within tiers within the class,” Piccirilli explains.
