A 3-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car in an Englewood, Fla., parking lot on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Jaxson (whose last name has not been shared) was standing next to his mother in the parking lot at 2931 South McCall Road around 8:25 p.m. local time as his mother placed her baby in their car, which was parked next to a Jeep, Gulf Coast News reported.
The toddler then walked in front of the Jeep as it pulled forward. It turned right and struck the child, WINK News reported, citing Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers.
Jaxson suffered critical injuries and was flown to Tampa General Hospital (around 90 miles north of the Walmart parking lot). He died of his injuries on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The driver was a 27-year-old woman; she was not injured.
No arrests have been made. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Jaxson’s grandfather said the young child was a “happy boy who was really starting to come into his own,” according to Fox 4.
Jaxson enjoyed going to his father’s softball games and playing catch and football, his grandfather shared, adding that he was looking forward to teaching Jaxson how to fish.
The grandfather also expressed his remorse for the driver, saying, “I feel sorry for her, it’s not her fault.” He added, “I feel bad for her, too. No ill will towards her.”
