A Florida man is accused of fatally stabbing his pregnant partner inside their apartment.

Mario Alejandro Ramirez, 37, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on Tuesday, Dec. 23 — just two days before Christmas — according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO).

The BSO said in a press release that deputies made the arrest after responding to a “report of a domestic disturbance” at an apartment in Oakland Park, Fla., just before 1 a.m. local time on Dec. 23. When they arrived, deputies located a “woman suffering from injuries including stab wounds,” and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputies also found Mario, who “appeared to be suffering from self-inflicted injuries” at the residence at the time. The BSO said deputies “struggled” with the 37-year-old man while “applying pressure to stop his bleeding.”

They eventually got him under control and arrested him. He was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment.

The BSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on the case.

The victim was identified as Fayanni Andreina Ramirez, Mario’s partner, with whom he shared three children, according to NBC Miami, WPLG10 and CBS News. Fayanni had allegedly been pregnant at the time of the attack, per WPLG10, which cited investigators.

Fayanni also had an active restraining order against Mario at the time of the incident due to a similar prior incident, according to WPLG10.

Crime scene photos obtained by the outlet allegedly show blood splattered on a window and a blue tarp covering a body inside the apartment complex.

A neighbor, who was not identified, told WPLG10 that they heard what “sounded like furniture, like hitting, and there was a lot of screaming,” happening around the time that the incident allegedly occurred.

Another neighbor, Paola Alvarez, told NBC Miami that she saw the couple’s three children run out of the apartment covered in blood. “That’s something they’ll never be able to erase from their minds, never,” she said.

Mario was held without bail before appearing before a judge on Friday, Dec. 26. Investigators told WPLG10 that his motive remains unclear.
