Husband Allegedly Drove Golf Cart Drunk, Causing Wife’s Death When She Hit Her Head

A former New York City restaurant owner is “heartbroken” after being charged in a DUI golf cart crash that left his wife dead late last month in Florida, his attorney tells PEOPLE.

Angelo Theodosiou was arrested and charged with a DUI after the Nov. 30 crash, which killed his wife Christina Theodosiou after she fell from the cart and hit her head on the ground, according to reports from Action News Jax, the St. Johns Citizen, and WFOX.

“All I can say at this point is that my client is heartbroken and that his family continues to stand behind him in this troubling time,” attorney L. Lee Lockett told PEOPLE in a comment on Monday, as his 64-year-old client faces the criminal charge in connection with his 58-year-old wife’s death.

“He’s distraught,” the attorney also told the St. Johns Citizen. “He’s depressed as can be.”

The husband’s attorney also claimed that Theodosiou’s son told him the family is supporting Angelo at this time, despite the charges.

According to Action News Jax, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office claimed Angelo’s eyes were bloodshot and he reeked of alcohol at the time of his arrest, adding that the husband alleged refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene.

“He was pacing around,” one neighbor, Christopher Barnes, told the outlet.

“You shouldn’t be drinking and driving,” another neighbor, Yariela Farkas, told Action News Jax. “It’s still a vehicle, and it’s still dangerous.”

Taylor Levesque, a spokesperson with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, would not comment on Theodosiou’s case and refused to provide information surrounding the case.

Lockett, who is representing Theodosiou, the former Jackson Heights, Queens, restaurant owner, told PEOPLE the case is still in discovery and that his office is “still awaiting most of the investigative information.”

The attorney similarly told the St. Johns Citizen: “My client maintains his innocence and we’re looking forward to receiving the evidence.”

According to the outlet, Christina died after being airlifted to a local hospital with injuries she sustained from her head hitting the concrete amid the crash. An obituary saw dozens of friends and family sharing memories and photos of the late New York woman, her husband, and their family.

“He didn’t cause the accident,” Lockett reiterated in his statement to the St. Johns Citizen. “He was not impaired.”

A family friend who spoke with the outlet added: “They are both wonderful, wonderful people. They retired here and were really happy. It’s just terrible, it’s unbelievable.”
