Marisa Kashino’s ‘Best Offer Wins’ Is the December GMA Book Club Pick (Exclusive)

Good Morning America has announced their December book club selection!

On Nov. 21, the morning talk show shared that Marisa Kashino’s debut novel, Best Offer Wins, is the latest pick for their monthly book club.

Best Offer Wins centers on Margo Miyake, a publicist who lives in the Washington, D.C. area. After years spent in a cramped apartment with her husband, she’s ready to buy a house in the suburbs — and utilize it to finally begin a family, per the book’s synopsis.

After a treacherous real estate battle, Margo gets a tip about her perfect home, set to land on the market the next month. Margo will stop at nothing to make sure the house is hers, though — even if that means worming her way into the homeowners’ lives, and becoming increasingly more “unhinged” in her strategies.

In an exclusive video shared with PEOPLE, Kashino says that the novel stemmed from “the particular nightmare” of trying to purchase a house in today’s cutthroat housing market. Her own experiences as a real estate journalist, for outlets like The Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine, led her to hear plenty of “horror stories” from people trying to get their dream home.

“I heard about houses that were getting fifty or sixty offers and going for many hundreds of thousands of dollars over list price,” she says. “I heard about open house lines that wrapped around the block. There was even one listing that was so popular, all of the normal showing appointments were booked up, and people were going to see it in the middle of the night.”

“I didn’t hear about anybody going quite to the same extremes that Margo, the protagonist in my book, goes to, but all of that was very, very helpful source material when I sat down to write the novel.”

Per its synopsis, the novel is “dark, biting, and laugh-out-loud funny,” with a morally grey character that readers will support “even as you gasp in disbelief.”

The GMA Book Club first launched in 2019; its young adult book club debuted in September 2024.

Best Offer Wins will be published on Nov. 25 by Celadon Books and is now available, wherever books are sold.
