Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith flips off Michigan fans in photo from win

There’s no love lost between college football’s fiercest rivals.
Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith was seen offering the Big House crowd a one-finger salute during the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes’ 27–9 victory over No. 15 Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
The moment occurred during the second quarter, when the sophomore wideout corralled a 35-yard touchdown from second-year quarterback Julian Sayin — fueling OSU to its first victory over the Wolverines since 2019.
Smith then shared the viral photo on his X account after the game.
Smith, 20, hauled in three receptions for just 40 yards, largely limited to the deep end-zone connection, which nearly got called back.
The receiver seemingly bobbled the ball as he approached the goal line and didn’t regain control until he was out of bounds beyond the pylon, which would have resulted in a touchback, but the officials upheld the original ruling after review.
The score marked the Heisman hopeful’s 11th TD reception this season and 25th of his career, tying Super Bowl champ Santonio Holmes for the sixth-most in program history.
The defending national champs went on to shut out Michigan after the intermission, rolling to a dominant victory that polished off a perfect 12–0 record (9–0 Big Ten).
Smith’s flagrant end-zone gesture ended up being more provocative than the Buckeyes’ victory celebration, as head coach Ryan Day shut down his team’s attempt to plant a flag at midfield.
He didn’t want to see a repeat of last year, when a brawl broke out between the bitter rivals after the Wolverines planted a flag, following an upset victory over the Buckeyes at the Horseshoe.
Ohio State is set to take on No. 2 Indiana (12–0) in the Big Ten Conference Championship game on Saturday night in Indianapolis, aiming to secure the top seed in the College Football Playoff and inch closer to its second consecutive national championship.
