Jason Kelce is giving advice about what not to do on a first date.

Jason, 38, and his wife Kylie Kelce first revealed in the 2023 Prime Video documentary Kelce that they met through the dating app Tinder, and that their first date, which ended with Jason falling asleep at the bar and needing to be carried home by a teammate, was not a good indication of their future love story. “He fell asleep at the bar, like just, out, like asleep, asleep,” Kylie, now 33, said in the documentary.

Now, Jason says he’d advise others to “not do what I did” as he reflects on that less-than-perfect meeting while speaking with PEOPLE about the launch of Slow Burn by Kingsford, a new limited-edition fragrance inspired by Kelce.

“My advice would be to not do what I did. I think I got very lucky to get a second date with my wife,” he says.

“But listen, everything happens for a reason despite the level that it got to,” the former Philadelphia Eagles star continues. Jason says he “still” remembers “a lot of the moments vividly,” including “seeing her” for the first time — which he previously called a “love at first sight” moment — but admits, “I don’t remember a lot from that night.”

Jason says falling asleep at the bar on his first date with Kylie was “probably not one of my finer moments,” but the father of four is grateful “she was willing to make it through that,” he tells PEOPLE, adding, “Lucky for me.”

And for fans who are still searching for their own Jason and Kylie romance via dating apps, the Monday Night Countdown host says there’s hope for everyone. “It depends on how you use it,” he says of online dating, “Yeah, it worked for us, so I think there’s hope.”

In Kelce, Kylie said that Jason called her the day after their first date and asked if they can “try that again” sometime. Kylie said her now-husband “did much better” on his second impression.

Jason’s former teammate Beau Allen shared his recollections of the night on a 2023 episode of Fax and The King, remembering that Jason “kept f—ing with me” while Allen was carrying him “maybe half a mile” from the bar. “It was exhausting because he was pure dead weight,” Allen said.

“It’s like literally carrying a corpse. But he would come to life randomly and squirm around and try and get me to drop him,” Allen remembered, adding that Kylie must have “really swept him off his feet” that night.

Kylie and Jason wed in Philadelphia in April 2018 and they share four daughters — Wyatt, 6, Elliotte, 4, Bennett, 2, and Finn, 7 months.
