A New Jersey man is accused by prosecutors of killing a pedestrian with a bow and arrow in an apparently random attack.
Pablo Criollo, 45, was walking down a sidewalk in Kearny when he was struck by an arrow around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Surveillance footage obtained by NBC News captured the horror. The video captures the sound of a bow snapping just before the man flinches in pain.
“Every morning, my daughter is asking me about her father, what time he will come home,” Criollo’s surviving wife, Paula Amez, told the news outlet in Spanish at a vigil. She said he was on his way home for dinner when he was killed.
During the investigation, authorities identified 44-year-old Oscar Feijoo as a person of interest and tried to speak with him at his Kearny home, prosecutors said. The attempt at questioning, however, escalated into an hours-long SWAT standoff, during which Feijoo barricaded himself inside and set multiple fires, prosecutors claimed in the statement.
The fires were extinguished, and Feijoo ultimately surrendered to authorities after exiting the home “armed with knives,” prosecutors said. He was taken into custody shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21.
He has been charged with murder, aggravated arson and weapons offenses. Prosecutors said additional charges are expected. It’s unclear if Feijoo has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
In a GoFundMe campaign set up to help cover funeral costs and other expenses, Criollo’s stepdaughter, Azul, wrote that the family is “completely shattered by this act of violence.”

“Pablo came from Ecuador at the age of 16 to start a new life,” the fundraiser reads. “I knew him for 10 years and through that he was my mother’s partner and provided for me like I was his own daughter.”
She added that the family lost their “main source of income and and don’t know how to make it through these upcoming days or months.”
As of Wednesday, Dec. 24, the GoFundMe had raised more than $37,000, nearly doubling its $20,000 goal.
