Steelers’ Cam Heyward accuses Josh Allen of kneeing him in stomach

Cam Heyward lost his cool against the Bills on Sunday.

Heyward, one of the league’s oldest defensive players at 36, got into a testy altercation with Bills star quarterback Josh Allen in a moment that nearly came to blows midway through the second quarter, when the Steelers were leading 7-0, and later accused Allen of kneeing him in the stomach at the end of a run.

“Being kneed in my stomach, and then just jawing back and forth,” Pittsburgh’s defensive tackle said postgame. “Then I’m ticked off the entire game, because the quarterback there is protected, but I’m not? It just pisses me off.”

On the play, a third-and-3 from the 48, Allen took a carry up the middle for a first down, where Heyward appears to claim that Allen kneed him in the stomach on the way up, igniting a visceral reaction from the 15-year veteran.

Allen was nearly immediately separated from the confrontation by offensive linemen Alec Anderson and Ryan Van Demark, who went facemask to facemask with Allen.

Heyward was called for taunting later in the game as the Steelers struggled to maintain their previous success, falling behind 17-7 and eventually losing 26-7.

After the game, Allen took the high road when asked about Heyward’s anger toward him.

“I love the competitiveness out of this game. He’s such a great player,” Allen said. “Sometimes you need fire like that to get you going.”

The Bills’ (8-4) win on Sunday was critical to their playoff hopes, as Buffalo looks to steal away the AFC East division title from the Patriots (10-2).

Buffalo has a tough schedule the rest of the way, as they host the Bengals next before a critical matchup with the Patriots.
