Tourist Was Repeatedly Stabbed Inside Macy’s While Changing Her Baby in Bathroom

A tourist was stabbed several times at the Macy’s flagship store in Manhattan amid the shopping rush of the busy holiday season.

Law enforcement officers with the New York Police Department responded to Macy’s Herald Square on Thursday, Dec. 11, after a report of an assault, the NYPD confirms in a statement to PEOPLE.

The victim is a 39-year-old woman, whose name has not been publicly announced. She suffered multiple stab wounds to her back and a laceration to her left arm, the NYPD said. She was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Authorities arrested 43-year-old Kerri Aherne in connection with the assault.

The victim, who is visiting from California, was reportedly changing her baby in a bathroom when Aherne allegedly went inside and began stabbing her, FOX 5 NY reported, citing unnamed law enforcement sources. The attack was allegedly unprovoked, the sources reportedly said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the baby was harmed.

The NYPD did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.

Aherne, of Tewksbury, Mass., was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and child endangerment, per the NYPD.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Aherne has retained an attorney to speak on her behalf. Online court dockets did not show her records as of Friday afternoon.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Macy’s said they are “deeply saddened about the incident that took place yesterday as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority.”
