A grandma and her three grandchildren have been found alive after they went missing in the South Carolina wilderness overnight.

The group was reported missing around 6:50 p.m. local time on Monday, Nov. 24, by one of the children, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy stated that he and three others, an adult woman and two other juveniles, had gotten lost in the area of Caesar’s Head.

The sheriff’s office identified the missing individuals on Tuesday, Nov. 25, as grandmother Tonda Michelin and her three grandchildren: Melody Bangs, 14; Michael Lawton, 11; and Dale Moser, 9.

An “urgent” search for the group of missing hikers was then conducted in the area of Caesar’s Head and Raven Cliff Falls, according to the department.

Shortly after 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced that all four hikers had been “located safely” by search and rescue teams on the Bill Kimbrell trail.

Teams searched for the group through what the sheriff’s office described as “rugged terrain.” Helicopters, drones and UTVs were used to help scour the area.

Authorities said the Raven Falls trailhead was closed during the search “to allow emergency crews full access to the area.”
